Is A Silk Mask Better For Preventing Maskne?
If you’re feeling like me, you’re probably sick of wearing masks by now, and you might have noticed something that has been getting under your skin, literally! Maskne. Non-comedogenic face masks have been wreaking havoc on skin everywhere, causing pesky breakouts and glaring whiteheads. This unwelcome phenomena known as “maskne” (mask + acne) is also associated with redness, irritation, and bumps.
The standard masks on the market can create friction on your skin and cause irritation around your ears, nose, and chin because of the rough seams. As hotter days approach us, sweat starts to creep under. My breath gets hot in the mask and creates a swampy feeling around the bottom half of my face. Since acne can be the result of clogged pores, it makes sense that I experience some degree of maskne after wearing a face mask every day in school for so long. So, I did some research.
Silk is a feel-good smooth material, so silk masks caught my eye (bye scratchy medical masks). Slip makes silk face masks, to help with maskne. Finally, something gentle yet protective! Slip’s masks cost $39, so it’s an investment (like any other skincare products in your cabinet) relative to cheaper disposable masks. The silk alternative comes in a variety of styles and includes adjustable ear loops and an adjustable nose wire, with spare pieces in case you’re clumsy like me. If you decide to see what all the fuss is about, Slip’s masks come with care instructions. Handy for those lazy days! To clean the mask after a long day, machine wash on a delicate setting with similarly colored items. And avoid using bleach if you want the mask to keep looking as cute as it did when you opened the package.
My first impression: this mask is adorable! But does it have more to offer? Compared to standard masks, there are no seams that would cause skin irritation, so that checks off a box for me. The silk material is also much softer than that of a medical mask, making it more comfortable for long wear. But, the silk mask is relatively thick, so if you already have trouble breathing in masks, you might be huffing and puffing a little more with this one. I suggest using the silk mask on days you are extra concerned about keeping your skin clear.
